The Post Endorses Fenty

This may be the nail in the coffin of the Linda Cropp campaign. For weeks now, Cropp supporters, and others watching this race, predicted that Cropp would enjoy a late surge, particularly among white voters, as a result of an anticipated Washington Post endorsement of her campaign. Alas, for Linda Capt of the Titanic Cropp, The Post didn't endorse her - choosing instead to endorse front-runner Adrian Fenty.

From The Post:

The criticism from his opponents notwithstanding, there is more to Adrian Fenty than a youthful, energetic and politically ambitious grass-roots campaigner. There is a can-do quality in him that suggests the government can be reformed, that schools can be rebuilt and that institutions in this city can come together to improve people's lives. He offers a vision of the city that challenges the best in people.

The Post's closing in its endorsement probably sums this race up about as well as one could:

The 2006 mayoral campaign is all about the District's future in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Democrats inclined to vote their fears may look elsewhere. A vote for hope, however, is a vote for Adrian Fenty.

The Post based their endorsement of Fenty over Cropp as, essentially, “energy over record.” There’s probably a reason that the Post discredits using the past professional record of a candidate as a rationale for their endorsement. Let’s look at theirs:

1978 and 1982 endorsement: Marion Barry — arrested and indicted while in office.
1990 endorsement: Sharon Pratt–Kelly — almost recalled after a series of scandals in office.

Now, they want us to take their endorsement of Fenty as having weight. But with a track record like that, can we trust them?

On September 12th, I will vote for substance over style, and record over show. I will vote against the Post and Fenty, and for a candidate with a proven track record, because, given the history, it’s too dangerous not to.

Blah blah blah. Yet another anonymous Cropp supporter hoping to scare people into voting for Linda Cropp. I particularly love the fact that this anonymous poster attacks The Post - you arent fooling anyone, if Cropp had gotten The Post's endorsement you all would have plastered it all over the damn place. Man Cropp supporters are an annoying lot.

I am not an "annonymous" Cropp supporter; I am a vocal Cropp supporter.

On August 30, 1978, the Washington Post endorsed Marion Barry, stating, “Barry has... energy, nerve, initiative, imagination...”

This week, they used strikingly similar language to justify a Fenty endorsement: “Fenty is... youthful, energetic, ambitious... can-do...”

In 1978, they acknowledged the risks involved in selecting a Barry administration and were wrong in their rationale that the risk would be less than “more of the same.” They are also wrong in their endorsement of Fenty when they acknowledge "a Fenty Administration (will) make mistakes? Probably more... than can be expected from the more experienced...”

They go on to base their endorsement on the thought that these mistakes will be subdued by some unstated future achievement. But with their track record, can we believe them?

So says anonymous Cropp supporter. Here's a clue if you sign in under anonymous that makes you anonymous you pin head. It looks pretty stupid when the lead in to your comment says "anonymous said..."

Like I have said before, the Cropp supporters themselves provide plenty of reasons why I shouldnt support her.

In a city with a sadly large number of illiterate, yet, voting, residents, it think it is arrogant and inappropriate to suggest that a newspapers endorsement of a candidate is reflective of the success or failure of that candidate at the polls.

Nonetheless, most Americans think their opinion is that of Most Americans, even if they are completely off the mark.
